Selection for the French Gourmay 2014 in Hong Kong
Le French May is a festival organized every year in Hong Kong by the Consulate to promote French culture and art. During all the month of May, many events are planned around the cinema, music, dance, fashion, theater and also gastronomy. This is called Le French Gourmay ! After chaotic beginnings, Le French Gourmay take on a new dimension and, for this edition, Mr. Consul has clearly give one’s best shot for the Hongkongers and Macanese love France. Budget of 5.5 M€, launched with much fanfare with Pierre Gagnaire and mannequin-pastry Amanda Strang, press conference of Laurent Fabius, dedicated websites, Facebook pages, promotional videos with HK stars, poster campaigns, it was really hard to miss.
Development of this festival is associated with the recent and rapid
invasion arrival of French in Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s dining scene continues to welcome new institutions of French cuisine or claiming as such. Akrame, Serge et le Phoque, La Vache, La Saison by Jacques Barnachon, Le Dôme de Cristal, and many others. The French are everywhere (at least between Sheung Wan and Causeway Bay). Fleeting consequence of the impressive wave of expatriation, passing fad of rich Chinese investors or real enthusiasm in Hong Kong for French cuisine, only time will tell…
Anyway, in 2014, nearly 100 restaurants and shops participate in Le French Gourmay. In 2013, Le French Gourmay showcased Burgundy. This year, the spotlight is on our beautiful region of the Rhone Valley. In this French expatriate jungle, there are some good places but others are less desirable. Some restaurants play perfectly the game while others are content to be included in the catalog. I propose today a well-chosen addresses selection to enjoy this French Gourmay 2014 in Hong Kong.
